Our Founder’s Story

Phoilex was born from Sarina’s personal experiences of struggling with chronic eczema all while seeing her father do the same with severe psoriasis. Years of steroid treatments led to immunity and worsening flare-ups, leaving him in constant pain—so severe that even wearing a long-sleeve shirt was unbearable.

Determined to find a better solution, our founder took a deep dive into research with a vision to bridge Eastern and Western medicine. Partnering with the industry’s leading experts in sensitive skin, she discovered the healing power of plants and created a natural, steroid-free treatment suitable for all skin types, regardless of age.

The results were remarkable: her father went from having three painful flare-ups a week to one mild flare-up a month. Inspired by this success, Phoilex was established to offer others the same relief and renewed quality of life.

Phoilex partners with ITSAN (International Topical Steroid Awareness Network), which is the only global 501(c)(3) non-profit charity dedicated to raising awareness on Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW).

The charity speaks for the millions of people around the world who suffer from TSW. Through online platforms and advocacy initiatives, ITSAN facilitates a supportive community for individuals, caregivers, and healthcare providers affected by TSW. Our shared vision and commitment to their cause drove us to become an active part of their journey.

    Assistant Professor Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo

    John Papastergiou, a 2002 graduate from the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto, embarked on an illustrious career that has seen remarkable achievements and contributions to the field. 

    John holds adjunct professorships at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto and earned a PhD from Radboud University, Netherlands. Aside from his academic achievements, John hosts the podcast "The Pharmacists Are In" and owns and operates four Shoppers Drug Mart locations in downtown Toronto.

    John has received numerous accolades, most notably the 2014 CPhA Canadian Pharmacist of the Year, the 2016 OPA Voice of the Profession Award, and the Pharmacy Practice Commitment to Care Award for Overall Patient Care. In 2019, he was recognized as one of the top 100 healthcare leaders globally by the International Forum on Advancement in Healthcare and received the OPA Award for Excellence in Research and Academia. In 2020, he accepted the inaugural Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto Alumni Leadership Award. As part of Phoilex’s Advisory Board, he brings with him his extensive expertise in pharmacogenomics and community pharmacy to help guide the development of Phoilex’s skincare solutions.
